Usage Note

Recommandation covers both a personal endorsement (une lettre de recommandation — letter of recommendation) and an official directive or advisory (les recommandations de l'OMS — WHO guidelines). The verb is recommander. In everyday speech, recommandation also means a tip or suggestion.
