Usage Note
Pensionnaire refers to someone who lives in an institution — a boarding-school pupil, a resident of a retirement home, or even a full-time member of a theatre company such as the Comédie-Française. It is gender-common: un/une pensionnaire. Contrast with demi-pensionnaire (a pupil who only has lunch at school).
