originaire

originally from, native of

adjective oh-ree-zhee-NEHR Rare

Usage Note

originaire is always followed by de to indicate geographic origin: il est originaire de Lyon (he is originally from Lyon). Unlike original (novel, creative), originaire is purely about provenance. It does not change for gender, only for number (originaires in the plural).

Examples

"Elle est originaire d'un petit village normand."

Natural Translation

She is originally from a small Norman village.
