Usage Note

Opposant refers to a political or ideological opponent, most often used in political contexts — les opposants au régime ('opponents of the regime'). The feminine form is opposante. As a present participle used as a noun, it is distinct from adversaire (a sporting rival) and ennemi (an enemy). The abstract noun opposition (f) is closely related.
