Usage Note
Natte covers both a hair braid (une natte africaine) and a woven mat placed on the floor. The hair sense is more common in everyday speech — porter des nattes means to wear braids. The verb natter means to braid. A beach mat is often called une natte de plage, distinguishing it from un tapis (rug).
