natal

native, of one's birth

adjective na-TAL Rare

Origin: From Latin 'natalis' (of birth).

Usage Note

Natal is used almost exclusively in set phrases tied to birthplace: pays natal (native country) and ville natale (hometown). The feminine is natale. Note that natal is distinct from natif/native, which refers to a person; you say elle est native de Paris but sa ville natale est Paris.

Examples

"Il a retrouvé sa ville natale après vingt ans."

Natural Translation

He returned to his hometown after twenty years.
