Usage Note
Mme is the standard abbreviation for Madame, the formal title used for adult women in French, equivalent to 'Mrs.' or 'Ms.' in English. Unlike in English, French does not use a period after the abbreviation in modern usage. Madame is always used in professional and polite contexts regardless of marital status, having largely displaced Mademoiselle in official French since 2012.
Examples
"Mme Dupont a appelé ce matin."
Natural Translation
Mrs. Dupont called this morning.
