marier

to marry

verb mah-ree-AY Common

Also means

to wed

Usage Note

Marier is transitive — a priest or official marie two people. When speaking about oneself getting married, French uses the reflexive se marier avec someone (elle se marie avec Paul). This is a common learner pitfall: you cannot say je marie Paul to mean 'I am marrying Paul' unless you are officiating the ceremony.

Examples

"Ils vont se marier en juin."

Natural Translation

They are going to get married in June.

Literal Translation

They go themselves-marry in June.
