Usage Note

Marbre refers both to the stone and to the smooth composure it evokes: rester de marbre means to remain stony-faced or unmoved. In printing, le marbre historically referred to the stone slab on which type was set. The adjective marbré ('marbled') describes a swirling pattern on paper or food.
