mander

to summon, to send for

Origin: Latin mandare 'to entrust, to order'

Usage Note

Mander is a formal or archaic verb meaning to send word to someone to come, or to dispatch a messenger. It survives mainly in set legal and literary contexts — mander quelqu'un à comparaître ('to summon someone to appear'). In everyday speech it has been replaced by convoquer (official summons) or appeler (to call). The noun mandat shares the same Latin root.
