loup

wolf

noun LOO Less Common

Origin: Latin lupus

Usage Note

Loup is silent at the end — pronounced 'loo', not 'loop'. The feminine is louve. The expression avoir une faim de loup means 'to be ravenously hungry' (literally 'wolf's hunger'). Il faut hurler avec les loups ('one must howl with the wolves') is a proverb meaning you adapt to your surroundings.
