Lot covers a batch or set of items (un lot de marchandises — 'a lot of goods'), a lottery prize (le gros lot — 'the jackpot'), and informally someone's fate or lot in life. Tirer le gros lot means 'to hit the jackpot'. In everyday speech un lot can also refer to a property parcel.
