Usage Note
Lait is masculine and the final t is silent. The phrase café au lait (coffee with milk) is internationally recognized. Lait entier is whole milk; lait écrémé is skimmed milk. The adjective lacté (milky, milk-based) and laitier (dairy) derive from the same root.
