laisser

to leave

verb leh-SEH Common

Also means

to let

Usage Note

Laisser splits two ways: to leave something behind, as in laisser ses clés, and to let or allow, as in laisse-moi faire. It seasons idioms like laisser tomber (to drop it or give up) and se laisser aller (to let oneself go), and unlike partir it always needs an object.

Examples

"Laisse-moi tranquille."

Natural Translation

Leave me alone.
