Jetée derives from jeter (to throw/project) — it is a structure 'thrown out' into the water. It can refer to a harbour breakwater or a pier for boarding boats. Chris Marker's 1962 science-fiction film La Jetée is one of the most celebrated French short films, which has given the word additional cultural resonance in cinephile circles.
