Usage Note
Insulte is a direct affront or offensive remark, and is used both literally (a verbal insult) and figuratively (c'est une insulte à l'intelligence = 'it's an insult to one's intelligence'). The verb insulter means to insult someone. In legal French, injure is the technical term for verbal abuse, but insulte is the standard everyday word.
