insensible

insensitive

adjective an-sahn-SEEBL Rare

Also means

numb

Usage Note

Insensible covers both physical numbness ('numb to cold') and emotional insensitivity. Insensible à la douleur means 'unable to feel pain'. The antonym is sensible. Note that French sensible means 'sensitive', not 'sensible' — a classic false friend. Insensiblement (adverb) means 'imperceptibly, gradually'.

Examples

"Il reste insensible à nos arguments."

Natural Translation

He remains insensitive to our arguments.
