Ingénieur has historically been used in the masculine for both men and women in formal French, though une ingénieure is now the officially recommended feminine form in France and Canada. In French companies, the title carries high social prestige. The adjective ingénieux (ingenious) shares the same Latin root ingenium (talent, cleverness).
