Usage Note

Importer in the sense of 'to matter' is most often impersonal: peu importe ('it doesn't matter'), qu'importe ('what does it matter'), and formal il importe de/que ('it is important to/that'). The fixed n'importe compounds — n'importe quoi ('anything; nonsense'), n'importe où ('anywhere'), n'importe comment ('anyhow') — are idiomatic and very high-frequency in both formal and colloquial French.
