Usage Note

Hasard entered French from Arabic az-zahr (the dice), via Spanish azar. The phrase par hasard means 'by chance' or 'as it happens', while au hasard means 'at random'. Jeux de hasard are games of chance. The circumflex-less spelling is sometimes misspelled as hazard.
