hôte

host

noun OHT Less Common

Origin: Latin hospes (host, guest)

Also means

guest

Usage Note

Hôte is a dual word: it means both the person who receives (l'hôte qui accueille) and the person who is received (l'hôte invité). Context determines which sense is meant, which can cause ambiguity. The feminine l'hôtesse tends to be used more specifically for the welcoming role (flight attendant, hostess), while l'hôte remains somewhat literary.

Examples

"L'hôte a accueilli ses invités chaleureusement."

Natural Translation

The host welcomed his guests warmly.
