Hémorragie is used medically for serious or uncontrolled bleeding, and figuratively for a rapid, damaging loss: une hémorragie de talents (a brain drain), une hémorragie financière (a financial hemorrhage). The related adjective is hémorragique; for the action of bleeding heavily, French uses saigner abondamment. Note the spelling: double r.
