Grincer describes a high-pitched, scraping or grinding sound — une porte qui grince (a squeaky door), grincer des dents (to grind one's teeth, or to be silently furious). The idiom faire grincer des dents means to annoy or irritate someone. It takes a cedilla: il grince, nous grinçons.
