Goûter is both a verb (to taste, to sample) and a noun: le goûter is the traditional French afternoon snack for children, usually eaten around 4 p.m. after school. As a verb it can take a direct object: goûter une sauce (to taste a sauce) or be used with à: goûter à la liberté (to taste freedom).
