Usage Note

Exorciser is used both literally, for religious rites of casting out evil spirits, and figuratively, to mean 'to rid oneself of' a fear or trauma. The figurative use is common in literary and journalistic French: exorciser ses démons ('to exorcise one's demons'). The noun is un exorcisme and the person who performs it is un exorciste.
