Escroquerie is a legal term in France (a specific criminal offence between theft and fraud) as well as a colloquial word for any obvious rip-off. The person who commits it is an escroc (m, no feminine form needed — used for all genders). The verb is escroquer quelqu'un ('to swindle someone').
