errant

wandering, stray

adjective eh-RAHN Rare

Also means

roaming

Usage Note

Errant comes from the verb errer (to wander). Un chien errant (a stray dog) and un chevalier errant (a knight errant) are the most common collocations. The -t is silent. Do not confuse with the English false friend 'errant' meaning 'misbehaving' — in French it primarily means physically wandering.

Examples

"Un chien errant rôdait dans la rue."

Natural Translation

A stray dog was prowling the street.
