engueuler

yell at, chew out

verb ahn-guh-LEH Less Common

Usage Note

engueuler is familiar/vulgar in register — the root gueule (animal's mouth) makes it coarser than gronder or réprimander. Se faire engueuler means 'to get a dressing-down'. The reflexive s'engueuler means 'to have a shouting match'. Avoid in formal or written contexts.

Examples

"Le patron l'a engueulé devant tout le bureau."

Natural Translation

The boss chewed him out in front of the whole office.
