Empoisonneur derives from empoisonner ('to poison') and historically designated someone who commits poisoning. In informal modern French, un empoisonneur / une empoisonneuse is used figuratively for an insufferable nuisance or someone who spoils everything. The feminine form is empoisonneuse.
