Effacé as an adjective describing a person means withdrawn or self-effacing — someone who keeps a low profile. As a past participle of effacer ('to erase'), it can also literally mean erased or faded. The phrase rester en retrait is a near-synonym for the personality sense. The feminine form is effacée.
