déconner

to mess around

verb deh-koh-NEH Less Common

Also means

to talk nonsense

Usage Note

Déconner is a crude but very common informal verb meaning to act foolishly, joke around, or talk rubbish — roughly 'to screw around' or 'to bullshit'. It is too vulgar for formal contexts, where plaisanter ('to joke') is the safe choice. Sans déconner ('no kidding') is a very frequent interjection.

Examples

"Arrête de déconner et sois sérieux."

Natural Translation

Stop messing around and be serious.
