Duel historically referred to a formal combat between two opponents to settle a point of honor, common in 18th- and 19th-century French culture. Today it is used more broadly for any intense two-way contest — un duel verbal ('a verbal duel') or un duel au sommet ('a top-of-the-table clash'). The verb is se battre en duel.
