Usage Note
Devenir is built from de- plus venir (to come) and takes être as its auxiliary in compound tenses, as in je suis devenu. It is a key verb of transformation — qu'est-ce que tu es devenu ? asks 'what has become of you?' — and devenir fou is a common way to say 'to go crazy'.
