delà

beyond, on the other side

adverb duh-LAH Rare

Usage Note

Delà (also written de-là) almost always appears as part of the compound au-delà (beyond, in the beyond) or the phrase par-delà (beyond, across). Standalone delà is archaic; modern French uses the compounded forms. L'au-delà (with article) is the standard word for 'the afterlife' or 'the great beyond' — a culturally loaded term in literature and religion.

Examples

"Il y a un mystère au-delà de ces murs."

Natural Translation

There is a mystery beyond these walls.
