Usage Note

Déformer is used for physical distortion (a garment losing its shape) and figurative misrepresentation — déformer les faits ('to distort the facts'). The reflexive se déformer means 'to become misshapen'. The adjective déformé and noun déformation are commonly paired with it in both technical and everyday speech.
