court

Usage Note

Cour refers to a courtyard (of a school or building) or a royal court. La cour de récréation is the school playground. Note the homophone cours ('course', 'lesson', 'river course') and court ('short' as adjective) — only spelling distinguishes them in writing. The royal sense survives in faire la cour à quelqu'un ('to court someone').
