Couchette refers to a narrow sleeping berth, most commonly in a train (wagon-couchettes) or on a ship. It is a diminutive of couche ('layer', 'bed'). In French rail travel, a couchette is cheaper than a private compartiment and typically shared. Réserver une couchette means 'to book a berth'.
