conseiller

to advise, to recommend

verb kohn-say-YAY Less Common

Usage Note

Conseiller is also a noun meaning 'advisor' or 'councillor' (conseiller municipal — town councillor), which can cause confusion mid-sentence. As a verb it takes an indirect object: je lui conseille de partir. The related noun conseil means 'advice' (uncountable) or 'a council/board'. Déconseiller is the antonym ('to advise against').

Examples
