Usage Note

compréhension is used both for intellectual understanding and for empathetic tolerance — faire preuve de compréhension means 'to show understanding' in the sense of being sympathetic. In language learning, la compréhension orale means 'listening comprehension'. It is a feminine noun despite the long ending.
