Usage Note
Col has two main meanings: the collar or neck of a garment (col roulé, 'turtleneck'; col en V, 'V-neck') and a mountain pass (le col du Mont-Cenis). In anatomy it can also refer to the neck of an organ, as in col de l'utérus ('cervix'). Context always clarifies which sense is intended.
