Usage Note
cieux is the literary or religious plural of ciel. Ordinary speech says les ciels when referring to weather or painted skies, but les cieux appears in poetry, hymns, and elevated prose. Cieux is always masculine.

"Les cieux étaient couverts de nuages."
Natural Translation
The skies were covered with clouds.
