Cher has two main senses that learners often conflate: 'expensive' when describing price (c'est trop cher = it's too expensive) and 'dear' as a term of affection (mon cher ami). The feminine form is chère. It is also used to open letters (Cher Jean,), equivalent to 'Dear Jean'.
