Usage Note

Borne originally meant a boundary stone or milestone; today une borne kilométrique is a kilometre marker on French roads. In modern usage une borne increasingly refers to a self-service terminal or kiosk (borne interactive, borne de recharge = charging point). The plural les bornes also appears in the expression dépasser les bornes (to go too far, to cross the line).
