avérer

to prove to be

verb ah-veh-REH Rare

Usage Note

Avérer is almost exclusively used in the reflexive form s'avérer (to turn out to be, to prove to be): la situation s'est avérée difficile (the situation turned out to be difficult). Using it non-reflexively is considered non-standard. It is more formal than se révéler and implies verification of a fact.

Examples

"Son intuition s'est avérée correcte."

Natural Translation

His intuition proved to be correct.
