Usage Note
Amante is the feminine form of amant and denotes a woman in a romantic or sexual relationship outside marriage. It carries a literary register; in everyday speech French speakers often use petite amie or compagne instead. The pair amant/amante both derive from the Latin 'amans' (loving).
