Addition is a near-cognate with English but has an important practical use: in a French restaurant, l'addition, s'il vous plaît ('the bill, please') is the standard phrase to request the check. The mathematical sense (addition) is also standard. The verb additionner means 'to add up numbers'. Note ajouter is used for adding non-numerical things.
