Usage Note
Épouser means to marry a specific person, taking a direct object: il a épousé Marie ('he married Marie'). This distinguishes it from se marier ('to get married'), which is reflexive and does not require a direct object. In a more formal or literary register, épouser can also mean to embrace or adopt a cause or idea.
Examples
"Elle a épousé son meilleur ami."
Natural Translation
She married her best friend.
