Usage Note
Élire is an irregular verb meaning to elect someone to office. Élire un président means 'to elect a president'. The past participle is élu (masculine) / élue (feminine); les élus (the elected officials) is a common political term. Do not confuse with lire (to read), though they share a similar ending.
